It is 21:30pm January 2nd 2024, and I am tucked up cosy in bed whilst planning what gigs to attend this month. January looks to be an outrageously busy month for alternative shows around Bristol, so no doubt you have some events in mind for the coming weeks as well. The year beyond is looking hopeful too, with festival season announcements already booming (Outbreak has to get a special mention).
Before we launch full-speed into a year of music, though, I wanted to take a chance to catchup with some of the cities musicians to ask them three important questions: what was your favourite Christmas present? Do you have any New Years resolutions? What is your first gig of 2024?
Kicking off the festive fun, I chatted to Connie, vocals in The Shania Twainsaw Massacre, who were voted (by me) the sexiest band of 2023 (I am sure you would all agree though). Connie’s favourite Christmas present was a kitchen bin, her resolution was to have more fun outside of work, and there are no gigs planned for 2024 as of yet. I had the privilege of seeing the Twain’s three times in 2023 and their set is quirky, concise and heavy where you don’t expect it. They are the sort of band that can captivate a room within seconds, and hold your attention until its over. With that in mind, they have some merch and demos you can get your hands on if you can’t wait until 2024’s first gig announcements.
Next up I had the joy of messaging with Jay & the Knives crew who all had some cheer to spread.
I will be heading down to the next Knives headline show, and am looking forward to writing a juicy and indepth piece on their iconic live set. They had an astonishingly busy 2023, and the best way to keep up with the highlights is Instagram @knivesnoise. Whilst you’ve got your phone out- you may as well follow @thebristolmusicjournal too!
