Angélica Garcia @ the louisiana

tribal beats, dark pop, and a once in a generation voice

The Louisiana is arguably Bristol’s most prestigious and treasured venue. Sitting on the corner of the Wharf, with boats bobbing on the adjacent River Severn- these doors have seen international superstars play to audiences of fewer than 100 in their former years. I believe I am witnessing just this, when Angelica Garcia takes to the stage on a Monday evening in June.

The demographic of the fans in the room is as varied as her catalogue, her appeal has clearly transcended the barriers of geography and age. It is instantly apparent why she has been making quite the stir in the industry since Barack Obama selected her track ‘Jícama’ in 2019 as one of his songs of the year. She is the once-in-a-generation voice.

The performance moves pointedly through sections of industrial beats, with a standalone live drummer bringing home the enormity of the sound. A moment later, she is delivering an a capella melody with vocal runs lending to Latin influence, middle-eastern scales and jazz classics. This intimate concert is one on a current UK run that is bound to see Angelica’s music continue to gather traction and develop her undeniably unique musical output, uniting fans over Europe and the world with her voice.
